Q&A With Bullseye Media President

What drove you to start your own agency?

It kind of just happened – I knew I wanted to start a company and over the years it formed into a media agency. When I first started, I was doing marketing from a basement, but as the need for great media grew, we adjusted and hired talented people.

What’s Bullseye’s edge?

Video and no contractors – 100%. Most agencies do not do their video in-house because they don’t have the experience, equipment, or general skillset to do something awesome. We knew early on that video, animation, moving graphics, etc. would be a huge market as businesses want their marketing and media to be a step above.
Plus, if you look at stats alone, individuals are much more likely to watch a video than read copy. We don’t use contractors because we want to keep the quality of the work as high as possible. We can sit down with our team and work through the vision of the client every day.

What education or experiences prepared you for your role?

I was a business and history major in college and eventually got my masters in film production. My father is an entrepreneur as well as a number of other family members. My first job out of college was as Marketing Director of a car dealership and that job opened my eyes into what was possible in this field. I am forever thankful for that first job because the owners and my boss taught me so much.

What made you choose this line of business?

I get this question a lot and the answer is – I don’t know. After I told people I was going into film, we started to look back at old family videos and I was always behind the camera. We found tons of old videos I had filmed and edited. I guess I have always loved movies, but I wanted to make great media and ads for businesses to help them grow, especially after growing up in a family that was provided for by self-made work.

What are all the services Bullseye can provide?

We offer 5 big services, but they are all closely tied together:
1) Video production – full service, from start to finish. Pre-production all the way to the final product.
2) Web Development and Design
3) Animation
4) Virtual Reality
5) Digital Marketing/Advertising

How many employees do you have?

We have 8 full time and 2 part time at the moment.

In your opinion, what is the best advertising/marketing strategy?

Trick question, it varies by market and business. In our experience, great media and messaging wins every time.

What do you look for in an employee?

Easy question – initiative, loyalty, and a great attitude. Employers want people who are dedicated to their craft and are willing to work hard to get better every day.

How did you choose your current location?

It fit well with our client-base and we like to be downtown!

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in advertising, what would it be?

Work hard and don’t get discouraged. I truly believe that hard work beats talent. There may be others who have more experience, a bigger client-base, etc. but I can guarantee that our team will simply outwork them and provide service that is unparalleled.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

I can’t really think of one – we have a new Amazon brand launch that the whole team did great work on – that was truly a team effort. They should get all the credit.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Every day is different. We have been so fortunate to work with so many different types of businesses, it really is a blessing.

What is the best/funniest memory you have had at Bullseye?

We like to say that we would do anything for our clients – without naming them, we have literally stopped traffic to get a shot, but it looked great! The week long Vegas shoot was fun…I could list off a number of funny quotes from our team that week

If you could speak to your younger self just starting out, what advice would you give?

Slow down. When things get moving it is easy to try and run 1,000 miles an hour. Slow down and just focus on 1 task at a time. Some of the best advice I have ever gotten was: “Don’t worry about the money. Just do good work and the rest will take care of itself”. Best advice I have ever gotten. It is always about the work. Be honest, do great work, and work hard.

Who inspires you (alive or not) and why?

Family and our employees. My parents and grandparents (on both sides) have been instrumental in my life. I could go on and on but my grandmother came over from Germany with no money and worked in the circus, my other grandparents came from lumberjacks up north. Growing up, my mother and father toughed through some hard times to make our lives great, even when it was incredibly difficult for us. My dad is a perfectionist and my mom is arguably the best writer/teacher/role model in the world, so I had some big shoes to fill.

What’s next for Bullseye?

Who knows. Virtual Reality is on the forefront right now – we have been very fortunate to secure some big projects in that field. Drones, better cameras, and shooting the next big commercial is always on the radar!
